CHICAGO — A 26-year-old man was shot and killed in a brazen daytime attack in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the city’s South Side Saturday, according to the Chicago Police Department. The shooting took place just after 11 a.m. in the 4700 block of South Evans Avenue and has left residents shaken as authorities search for multiple suspects.
Police say the victim was standing on the street when three unidentified men ran up and opened fire, striking him multiple times. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators shows the man talking to someone inside a dark silver SUV before the gunmen approached and fired at him at close range. After the victim collapsed to the ground, the shooters continued firing—at one point aiming at the SUV and returning for more gunfire even after beginning to flee the scene.
A nearby resident, who asked not to be identified, described the terrifying moments leading up to the shooting. “My 13-year-old daughter came inside and said she saw guys in the alley with ski masks and a gun. Then, we heard the second round of shots,” she told reporters. Acting on instinct, she rushed to help the victim. “I grabbed some towels and ran out here,” she said, though her efforts were ultimately in vain.
Emergency responders transported the victim to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released as authorities notified his next of kin.
Shortly after the shooting, police discovered a flipped dark silver SUV—matching the one from the scene—just outside the University of Chicago Medical Center. One individual was hospitalized at that location, but authorities have not confirmed whether there is a connection to the shooting. No suspects are currently in custody.
Witnesses say a woman, believed to be the victim’s pregnant girlfriend, rushed out of a nearby home immediately after the shots were fired. Visibly distraught, she collapsed beside the victim, surrounded by onlookers and children who watched the tragic scene unfold from nearby windows.
Bronzeville residents expressed concern and frustration over the violence occurring in broad daylight and so close to home. “There were kids out here,” one neighbor said. “This could have ended with more people hurt. We can’t feel safe even on our block.”
The incident comes amid heightened concerns about gun violence in Chicago. According to police data, shootings in several South Side neighborhoods remain persistently high, despite ongoing efforts to curb violent crime through community policing and intervention programs.
Investigators are urging anyone with information about the shooters or the vehicle involved to contact Area 1 detectives. Surveillance footage and witness accounts are currently being reviewed in hopes of identifying those responsible.
The shooting adds to a growing list of gun-related homicides in Chicago this year and underscores the ongoing challenges city officials face in addressing crime, particularly in historically underserved neighborhoods.
As the victim’s family grapples with their loss, the community remains on edge. For residents of Bronzeville, Saturday’s tragedy serves as another painful reminder of the urgent need for stronger safety measures and support systems to prevent further bloodshed.
